We have all experienced it.  Times when it seems obstacles in our lives are just too big to overcome.  Often, all it takes is a little change in the way we view things, a plan of action, and the belief that overcoming is possible. 

I came across this video, and it serves as proof, that you can accomplish what you focus on.  So if you have ever thought that you couldn't excel at martial arts because of a physical limitation, think again.

A New Look and our Women's Self Defense Workshop

I hope you like the new look of this blog.  The new templates were pretty easy to use, and I think that this is a fresher and cleaner look that most of you will enjoy.

This past weekend, we hosted a women's self-defense workshop at our school.  We started by educating the ladies on some statistics and on the realities of assaults on women.  We then proceeded to teach some basic strikes and combinations that can be used on an attacker.

The seminar was fun to teach and all the ladies seemed to have had a great time.  We hope to have more events like this in the future as I think it is extremely important to empower women so that they can handle themselves if a dangerous situation arises.

Inosanto Instructor Seminar March 2010

Wow, what a great day.  9 hours of training at the Inosanto Academy in Marina Del Rey, CA.  My brain is officially mush.  I don't even remember my own name at this point, but I know that I had a great time. 

It's like Disney World for Martial Artists.  Jun Fan/JKD, Filipino Martial Arts, Thai Boxing, and Silat; as well as BJJ training with John Jaques Machado.

I even got to see Professor Salem, my Savate Instructor.

This was just the first day, and I'm looking forward to doing it again tomorrow.

Special thanks to Simo Jen, and all the members of the ITP program for helping out and covering classes for me to make this trip possible.

In closing, I would just like to say how thankful I am to be part of such a great organization with so many helpful and caring people; and what a privilege it is to train with Guro Dan at the Inosanto Academy.

Free Women's Self-Defense Workshop

Elite Martial Arts will be hosting a "FREE" Women's Self Defense Workshop on Saturday, March 27th at 12:00 noon.  It is open to the general public, but space is limited to the first 25 women that pre-register.  (ages 18 and up) Basic striking and survival skills that every woman should know will be covered.  Existing students are encouraged to invite their friends and to come in to assist the attendees for this workshop.

Ufc 110

Last night, we as a school went out to Duffy's Sports Grill to watch UFC 110.  There were a lot of really good fights, but more importantly we had a chance to meet with our students on a more personal level.  Thank you to all that attended, it was a great time, and it was nice to meet your friends and family members as well.  We will be doing this again in the near future, and we will also add some additional social events to our calendar.

Interpreting Poll Results

We received some surprising results in our last poll entitled "What is the Most Important Benefit of the Martial Arts?" Most would agree that self-defense would be high on the list, but self-defense was actually edged out by self-discipline. It just goes to show that in today's fast-paced world, people are struggling to discipline themselves to get to where they want to be in life. They see martial arts as an effective vehicle to get them there, and an effective way to improve the quality of their lives.

If you're a martial artist, then you have seen this effect in your own life and in the lives of your friends. We all got into martial arts for different reasons, but there is no doubt that training in martial arts drastically changes lives for the better.

UFC 109

Hello everyone,

We just watched another UFC event at Mr. Tony's.  Thanks to everyone who came out to support the event.  It's always nice to get to know our members and their families better.  We had a lot of fun.  Not because of the fights, but more because of the quality of the company. We truly enjoy spending time with each and every one of you and we look forward to doing more social events this year. 

As a reminder, there will be another UFC on Saturday, February 20th.  So we'll be at Mr. Tony's again.  We hope to see you there.

Google Favorite Place

We're very pleased to announce that our school  is now a Favorite Place on Google.  The folks over at Google sent us a window decal for our storefront, which apparently can be scanned by the cameras of some smart-phones like the Android.  The phone will then take them to our listing on Google.

I think that's pretty Cool.

I have included a picture of the decal so you can see what I'm talking about.  I don't know if it will work off of an internet picture, but I'm curious to see how it works.

In any case, we're pretty excited about it, and we wanted to share that with all of you.

Reflections on the Jacksonville Seminar

As I test how this blog updates on all my social media sites, I figured it would be good to write about something meaningful. Last weekend, I was privileged to train with my Instructor, Guro Dan Inosanto in Jacksonville, FL. Though I train with him throughout the year in various places throughout the country (Jacksonville, FL; Norcross, GA; and, of course, at the Inosanto Academy in Marina Del Rey, CA), I am constantly amazed at how he is able to make everyone around him better. Not only as martial artists, but also as people.

He is an inspiration and an example to us all.

I have met some of the nicest people through the Inosanto organization - people from all over the world who are always willing to lend a helping hand, and who share information freely to help you become a better martial artist and a better human being.

Did I learn a lot about martial arts at the seminar? Of course I did, but more importantly, the study of martial arts teaches us about living. I am so fortunate to have Guro Dan Inosanto as an example, and I can only hope that I have the same positive effect on my students as Guro Dan has had on me.
